It’s also the focus of our September newsletter.
We look at why greater consistency in inspection practices and the application of the Building Act matters, and why it needs the industry as a whole to work together.
We’re also covering what we’re seeing in the industry and working on this month, including:
IQP registrations lapsing
Building compliance gap assessments and what they’re uncovering
Our growing Northern team and new Auckland office
A simple but important reminder about final exits

Compliance Spotlight: Consistency across the Industry
Consistency across the building compliance industry is something we’ve grappled with for many years.
Different approaches to inspection practices and the application of the Building Act can cause confusion and frustration.
Greater consistency will help ensure everyone is on the same page, building owners aren’t paying more than they need to, the requirements of the Building Act are being met, and risk is being mitigated.
It’s not something one organisation can achieve on its own. We need the industry as a whole to work together and push for the consistency we need.
What We’re Seeing in the Field
We’re seeing a number of IQP registrations lapse, including those of contractor IQPs.
This can result in BWOFs not being processed, so it’s a timely reminder to check that your IQP registration is current and make sure it stays up to date.
Renewing an existing registration is relatively straightforward, but letting it lapse can create unnecessary hold-ups.
Project Update: Building Compliance Gap Assessments
We’re seeing an increase in requests for building compliance gap assessments. Our clients are finding these useful for identifying previously unknown risks within their buildings.
For example, we may find that what has been constructed doesn’t match the approved consented design, such as a required fire separation not being where it should be.
Something like this can have serious implications down the track if it isn’t identified and addressed.
Rain, hail or shine, we’ll get your inspections done.

Compliance Tip of the Month
Are your final exits clear?
Final exits should not be locked, barred or blocked, ensuring people can egress freely and aren’t delayed from reaching a place of safety in an emergency.
Some of the issues we see are multiple locks on doors, padlocked gates and items being stored in front of exit doors. It’s a simple thing to check, but an important one.
